Long-time New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay believes his career in the booth could be coming to an end soon. Now 65 years old, Kay said the thought of retirement has started to creep into his mind. And I’ve actually been thinking about the end.
When is it the right time? Because of my children’s ages, it’s kind of awkward,” Kay said in a recent podcast appearance on Awful Announcing. You want to be there for them.
I’m there all the time in the winter, every single day, because the radio station, four days a week, allows me to do the radio show at home. But then when Callie goes to college in five years, and Charlie goes to college in seven years, what am I going to do if I retire? I don’t see myself being alive in my 80s.
And if I was, I don’t see myself doing the games, but I guess you can’t rule anything out.” Kay has been a broadcaster for the Yankees since 1992, which means he has been around for five World Series championship seasons. On the podcast, he said he was not making any serious plans about his future. He explained how former Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully inspired him not to plan too far in advance.
I always use this line,” Kay said. I’m just amazed that (former Yankees broadcaster) John [Sterling] made it as long as he did. I don’t think I would be, but you never rule anything out.” For now, Kay will continue his role as part of a rotating group of analysts, including Paul O’Neill, David Cone and Joe Girardi.
