The ongoing saga between LSU and the SEC over the eligibility of former NFL players has taken another turn. A Louisiana court ruled that several former college football players — notably ex-Ole Miss players under Lane Kiffin, Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris — deserve a fifth year of college eligibility. Both players went undrafted in April's draft but spent training camp and the preseason on NFL rosters.
That put LSU at odds with the NCAA and SEC, whose rules bar athletes who've signed pro contracts from returning to college sports — though a judge blocked the conference from enforcing that rule. The SEC responded by filing a lawsuit giving itself the power to expel LSU entirely if things escalated, with a vote scheduled for Thursday. On Wednesday, university president Wade Rousse sent the SEC a letter saying the whole NFL-players issue is now "moot," and that LSU won't fight or try to cancel the SEC's special meeting.

He was abruptly fired in his lone NFL stint with the Oakland Raiders after just one season, then famously fired again from USC on the tarmac at LAX in the middle of the night following a blowout loss to Arizona State. Things fizzled out at Tennessee and Alabama too, and even after building Ole Miss into a College Football Playoff team, he abandoned the program right before the postseason kicked off to join LSU.
So it's not entirely shocking to see him now at the center of college football's biggest ongoing controversy — even if things appear to have cooled down for now.
