One man, one guitar, songs designed to unite a stadium without requiring anyone in attendance to agree on much except for loving the very concept of love. Macklemore was always going to test the limits of that bargain. After the rapper used his opening slot at Sheeran’s MetLife Stadium shows to call for a “Free Palestine” and perform his protest song “Hind’s Hall,” the politics that Sheeran had largely kept outside his own act suddenly occupied the same stage.
Macklemore also accused Israel of apartheid and genocide during the performances. Messina Touring Group, promoter of the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, said upcoming venues had told it they would not allow concerts to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup, potentially putting the remaining tour dates and hundreds of thousands of ticket holders at risk. The promoter said Macklemore was removed after those objections.
The calculation is pretty simple. A stadium tour is an expensive moving city involving venues, insurers, promoters, crews and tens of thousands of fans. If one opening act threatens that machinery, removing him becomes basic triage.
The strangest part of the unfolding is pretending anybody could have been surprised by Macklemore's actions. The Grammy winner might as well have arrived with his politics printed on the laminate around his neck. It also took a swipe at artists who stayed quiet.
Long before Gaza, Macklemore had been charged with accusations of antisemitism after appearing onstage in 2014 wearing a fake beard, wig and prosthetic nose that critics said was a Jewish caricature. He apologized and denied intending any Jewish stereotype; the Anti-Defamation League said it accepted him at his word. Apparently, so did Sheeran.
So whatever one thinks of Macklemore’s politics, nobody booking him in 2026 could plausibly mistake him for an artist likely to keep his opinions backstage. In his defense, he never pretended to be quiet…and that is what makes Sheeran’s quiet rather more interesting. Did Sheeran really expect one of pop music’s most conspicuous pro-Palestinian voices to be handed a microphone in a football stadium and suddenly discover the virtues of small talk?
