The French president and Canadian prime minister's meeting came weeks after the U.S. president made a controversial post on social media.
The leaders of France and Canada on Sunday pledged closer ties to grapple with rising geopolitical tensions, climate change and the erosion of democratic values, after they met in the French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon off Canada’s Atlantic coast. The two leaders’ visit to the territory, the first by a French president since 2014 and the first by a Canadian prime minister, followed just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump posted an image showing the islands, as well as all of Canada and other countries in North America, covered by the U.S. flag.
Ottawa has been seeking closer ties with the European Union amid an increasingly acrimonious trade war with the United States.
