The Halloween weekend saw violence unfold across the country, with at least 15 people killed and 90 others injured amid multiple incidents of gun violence across 11 states. The bloodshed struck public spaces, nightlife districts, and areas surrounding college campuses, prompting condemnation from local and state leaders as law enforcement agencies launched ongoing investigations into the outbreaks. Newsweek has compiled a list of where this past weekend's shootings took place and also reached out to police departments for comment via email.
A mass shooting unfolded at a Spirit Halloween store inside of a shopping mall on Friday in Fairfield. A 31-year-old woman named Constance Hages, who was pregnant, was killed. Three male victims, ages 16, 19 and 32, remained in critical condition, while a 23-year-old man was listed in stable condition.
Two other men, ages 19 and 43, were treated for gunshot wounds and later released. Investigators said they are reviewing surveillance footage and other evidence to identify the person responsible for what they called a target shooting. No arrests have been made.
In Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood, an area known for its nightlife, three shootings unfolded over a period of an hour and 15 minutes. Police said that four were killed and 15 were injured, and that they were working to determine if the shootings were related. Local law enforcement has also said that a suspect was arrested and at least another was being sought.
In a state with just over 1 million residents, there were two mass shootings on Halloween night, including one near its largest university. Six people were shot near the University of Delaware campus, Newark police confirmed. Five of the six remain in hospital, with one woman having been treated and released.
Police have confirmed that one of the shooting victims admitted to the hospital is a student. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, a Democrat, said in a statement: “We must never accept gun violence as a part of life in Delaware.” In Birmingham, there was a mass shooting after the annual Magic City Classic football game between the rival colleges, Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University. One person was killed and eight others injured, with two in critical condition, in two separate shootings outside of Legion Field after the game, the city’s Mayor Randall Woodfin said in a news conference on Sunday.
