Mason Rudolph has served several years as a backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. In 2026, Rudolph is entering yet another season as a backup option behind Aaron Rodgers. He's the most veteran option behind Rodgers, leading second-year pro Will Howard and third-round rookie Drew Allar.
On Wednesday, Rudolph said he's "jealous" of the structure these young signal callers have as they begin their careers in Pittsburgh. "I'm very aware that the fanbase is starved for a franchise QB. People want to have hope for the future beyond this year.
We've got two great QBs who are young and progressing," Rudolph said, via team insider Tim Benz. "I really am jealous of the structure they have had and this program and this QB-grooming system the way that Coach McCarthy has done it because I feel that they have made a lot of strides. I'll be rooting them on Friday." Rudolph, Howard and Allar all played in the Steelers' preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers last week.
Only Howard and Allar will take the field for Friday night's preseason matchup against the New York Jets, head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Wednesday. Friday night's game will kickoff at 7 p.m.
