Melania Trump helped broker a temporary Russia-Ukraine ceasefire to allow aid and civilian evacuations in Oleshky.

First lady Melania Trump has brokered a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, according to the White House, marking an unusual diplomatic role for a first lady as her husband pushes for an end to the yearslong war. The temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine, is set to begin October 29 and halt military action so humanitarian aid can enter and civilians can be evacuated through a designated safe passageway, according to the White House. Russia and Ukraine had not immediately confirmed the agreement publicly.

The White House said Melania Trump initiated discussions with both countries and that she and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to establish the ceasefire's terms. Her office described her role as the agreement's "exclusive intermediary." Asked by reporters Friday how the effort came about, Trump credited the first lady. "Her initiative," he said.

"They contacted both sides and both sides wanted to do it." Asked separately whether Melania Trump would participate in trilateral peace talks, Trump said she would not. "No, but it's not the worst idea I've ever heard," he said. "What she wants to do is save children.

And both sides are cooperating with her, so she's doing a very good job." "The situation in Oleshky is dire," the first lady said. "Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster." The White House said the city's remaining residents are predominantly elderly and urgently need medical care, food and clean water. Oleshky, located across the Dnipro River from Kherson, had a population of roughly 24,000 before the war but now has an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 residents, including about 50 children, according to the White House.

About 90 percent of the city was flooded following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam. Under the ceasefire, nonmilitary teams from both countries will be able to visit residents in their homes and coordinate transportation for those who want to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine, the first lady said. An American media organization will accompany the teams to document the operation.

Newsmax said its cameras would receive "exclusive access" to the effort. The agreement marks the latest diplomatic effort by Melania Trump related to the war. She first reached out to Putin in August 2025 with a personal letter hand-delivered by her husband during his summit with the Russian leader in Alaska.
