Phoenix Mercury rookie Marta Suarez celebrated Diana Taurasi's career by painting a portrait of the WNBA legend ahead of her Ring of Honor ceremony last weekend. The Mercury officially inducted Taurasi into the Ring of Honor on Sunday. Suarez, who has played 14 games with the Mercury this season, said Taurasi has always been one of her basketball idols.
Suarez had the opportunity to present the portrait to Taurasi, and Taurasi signed the painting. "What I told her about, or what the piece was about, was just the fact that Diana Taurasi is one of the first names that people recognized when they hear women's basketball some years ago, what it was and what it is today. She's definitely had a huge impact on my life, whether she knows it or not.
"I'm very glad that we have it on video because I definitely blacked out, so I don't remember none of that," Suarez said of her interaction with Taurasi. The Mercury will be auctioning Suarez's hand-painted, one-of-a-kind portrait of Taurasi on Saturday after their game against the Atlanta Dream. Taurasi's signature on the portrait adds to the painting's value.
Taurasi even said she may bid on the portrait herself.
