The North Carolina Tar Heels are heading into a new era under head basketball coach Michael Malone. Following the dismissal of Hubert Davis at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, UNC signed Malone on a six-year, $50 million contract to take over the program. Malone is determined to get the North Carolina program back to its winning ways — and he's not taking that challenge lightly.
"I've never walked away from a challenge. Coming to North Carolina is a challenge. Because of the current state of college athletics, it's a mess," Malone said during an appearance on The Field of 68 podcast.
"But this is a storied program, and I would've really regretted it if I didn't jump in and attack this head-on to try and get this program back to where all of Tar Heel nation wants it to be. But I'm not gonna shy away from that challenge. We will not shy away from that hard work.
It's something that I'm pulling all of my energy, all of my efforts into to try to get us back to where we all want to be." UNC will open up its 2026-27 schedule with a matchup against Western Carolina on Nov. 2.
