Michigan Makes Difficult QB Decision Before Rutgers Game

newsweek.com 28.10.2026 18:46 6 views
The Michigan Wolverines made a decision on what quarterback to play against Rutgers as the offense continues to struggle.

The Michigan Wolverines look for a spark against Indiana when they gave freshman Tommy Carr the start. Carr went 20 of 32 passing for 167 yards and one interception in the Wolverines' 13-6 loss to the Hoosiers. Carr's performance didn't show noticeable improvement over what the offense had looked like under Bryce Underwood for the first six weeks.

Underwood has completed 58.1% of his passes this season for 924 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. It was unclear after the loss to Indiana if Michigan would go back to Underwood before the Wolverines travel to play 2-5 Rutgers on Saturday. After the loss to Indiana, Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham told reporters he likes the way Carr commands the offense. It was his first start, his first chance to be the guy. "We're still high on Tommy and I believe he's going to get better and better.

It'd be absurd to judge him just off this one performance, but he is a guy that is mature beyond his years and very little bothers him. He's got a great demeanor to him.” Michigan's offense ranks No. 130 in the FBS, averaging 300.6 yards per contest. The Wolverines have only scored 20 or more points in two games, wins over Penn State and UTEP.

The woes on offense go beyond the quarterback position. The Wolverines are averaging 3.7 yards per rush. Lead running back Jordan Marshall has 319 yards and four touchdowns on 81 carries, 3.9 yards per rush.

The offense is the main reason for Michigan's 4-3 overall record and 1-3 record in the Big Ten in the first year of Whittingham. For more on the NCAA, head to Newsweek Sports.
