He argues the appeal of the format can't be understood solely as a question of individual behavior.

Instead, viewers are caught in a series of reinforcing feedback loops involving recommendation algorithms, content creators and the commercial incentives of platforms. Every interaction can help the algorithm learn what keeps someone watching. Micro-drama creators, meanwhile, get rapid feedback on what keeps audiences engaged.

Traditionally, repetition has provided a natural brake: Audiences eventually tire of seeing similar content. "A person might put their book down because chapter 47 feels like chapter 12," Chan said. "They might turn off the television because the third episode of a formula is less surprising than the first.

In each case, the system had a built-in brake." But he argues generative AI could weaken that brake by letting entertainment, such as micro-dramas, quickly and continually produce new, targeted stories, settings and variations, potentially delaying the point at which people lose interest. "The result may be an entertainment system in which the forces encouraging people to keep watching increasingly outweigh those encouraging them to stop," Chan said.
