When it comes to the best quarterbacks in the NFL today, there's a shortlist of elite players and many young stars with the potential to become elite. However, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin named the quarterback he'd most want to coach, and it wasn't the retiring Aaron Rodgers, reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, or any of the young, rising stars. Instead, Tomlin chose Buffalo Bills phenom Josh Allen as he heads into his ninth season.
When his NBC Sports colleague, Chris Collinsworth, listed Allen with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, Tomlin still picked Allen. Last season, Allen threw for 3,668 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. The Bills finished 12-5, but didn't win the division amid the emergence of Drake Maye and the New England Patriots. Despite reaching the postseason again, Allen failed to lead his team to a Super Bowl appearance, falling to Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round in an overtime thriller.
However, the Bills added another star receiver to their roster this offseason, trading with the Chicago Bears for DJ Moore. It remains to be seen how this new connection works, but many believe it could pay off this season. The Bills remain among early Super Bowl contenders, as they usually are each season, and now Allen, in his ninth NFL season, will get another chance to prove himself as capable of achieving a trip to the championship game.
