A recent report on Greg Hill's WEEI Radio show indicated that there's trouble brewing between New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and quarterback Drake Maye. But when speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vrabel firmly denied those rumors. In fact, Vrabel said he chose to take his head coaching job with the Patriots because of Maye's talent and promise as a rising quarterback star.
"Let me just tell you why I'm here. I'm here because Drake was the quarterback. Believe it or not, I had choices to where I wanted to coach and I wanted to coach here because Drake was the quarterback," Vrabel said.
Maye is off to a brutal start in his third NFL campaign. Last year's NFL MVP runner-up has just one touchdown pass and a whopping six interceptions through the first three games of the Patriots' 2026 season. Maye coughed up an embarrassing fumble and threw a costly end-zone interception in Sunday's 35-6 blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"I think quarterbacks want to make plays. they want to throw touchdowns," Vrabel said on The Greg Hill Show earlier this week. "We need to stop trying to choke the life out of every single play. We need to relax." The Patriots will look to get their season back on track in a tough Week 4 matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
