Mizuno Wave Rider 30 Review: A Comfortable Daily Trainer for Everyday Miles

The Wave Rider 30 is a comfortable, versatile daily trainer that works especially well for newer runners who want cushioning and support without a rigid or overly aggressive ride.

We have enormous stacks of foam, carbon plates, increasingly elaborate rocker geometries, and enough proprietary materials to make a chemistry professor scratch their heads. (Serves them right—a B?!) And while all of that technology has produced some truly epic trainers, sometimes you just want to put on a pair of running shoes and get your butt out the dang door. That’s where the Mizuno Wave Rider 30 comes in clutch. It’s a decidedly normal daily running shoe, and I love that about it.

There’s no break-in period, you aren’t bouncing on a plate trying to beat a land speed course record, and it’s not forcing your feet with rails. It’s happily cozy and comfy. I think this shoe is best suited for newer runners, especially those who want to get a feel for the road and for running as a whole.

It’s supportive and cushioned without being overly stabilizing or too propulsive. A lot of beginners get steered toward shoes that either lock the foot into a rigid path or push them forward with a snappy plate, and that can get in the way of finding their own rhythm. The Wave Rider 30 lets you feel the road and settle into your own stride, while still giving you enough cushioning that you aren’t beat up afterward.

The shoe is built around a full-length Wave plate, which has long been Mizuno’s signature. It adds structure and smooths out each footstrike without making the ride feel stiff or forced. On top of that, the midsole is dual-layered, with nitrogen-infused Mizuno Enerzy NXT foam sitting over an EVA base.

The result is a soft but stable ride that feels protective underfoot without being mushy or making you feel “sinky.” This is an easy-run shoe through and through, and it moves between different parts of your week without complaint. If you want one pair that covers most of your routine, this is a boss choice. You don’t have to swap shoes depending on the day’s schedule.

The one knock I have is that it runs a little warm. It could be a tiny bit more breathable, and I noticed that on hot summer runs. But we’re heading into colder months, and in cooler weather that extra warmth is going to feel really, really good.
