At the NTAs on Tuesday night (8 September), comedian Mo Gilligan threw in a joke about the row surrounding a controversial Miriam Margolyes interview in which she made a number of remarks about the skin colour of ITV presenter Andi Peters. Margolyes, 85, received criticism for questioning Peters about his parentage and also using an outdated and offensive term for a Black person with lighter skin. Presenting the Factual Entertainment prize at the National Television Awards, held at the O2 Arena in London, Gillian couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Margolyes over the incident.
During the segment on the daytime show This Morning, Margolyes started impersonating co-host Christine Lampard’s Northern Irish accent, when she suddenly asked Peters: “What accent would be normal for you? What are you?” “What am I? I’m me,” Peters said, to which the Harry Potter actor responded: “Well, you’re a mix, aren’t you?
So you’ve got a Black daddy and a white mummy.” He informed Margolyes that both of his parents are Black, before she went on to use an outdated phrase. When the host said that he “didn’t know there were shades”, Margolyes stated: “There are shades.” At this point, producers expressed their concern over the conversation in Peters’ earpiece, with the host saying: “They’re getting nervous now.” New subscribers only. £9.99/mo. after free trial. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent. He made the remark in the comments of an Instagram post from fellow presenter Jeremy Vine, who called the exchange “seriously nerve-wracking” and praised Peters for how he dealt with it. Margolyes, Peters and ITV did not respond to The Independent’s request for comment at the time.
Gilligan recently described the distressing effects of eating fried chicken for every meal, after undertaking the month-long challenge in a new Netflix film. He said there was a “drastic drop” in his wellbeing after a week, and things got worse another week later. The comic said that he gained weight, started sweating uncontrollably, and suffered mood swings.
He also fell into the habit of taking “scary naps” – which felt like deep and intense sleep. Last night’s NTAs saw Celebrity Traitors and Clarkson’s Farm scoop top prizes, with Gogglebox, This Morning and Strictly Come Dancing also among the big winners.
