Malaysia’s jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak, a central figure in the country’s biggest corruption scandal, has been granted a conditional pardon that allows him to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest, offering a reprieve for the ex-premier after spending the last four years in prison. Najib’s house arrest granted by King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, however, is conditional upon Najib paying a 50 million ringgit ($12.3 million) fine as part of his 1MDB sentence, the Prime Minister’s Department said in a statement on Friday. The house arrest runs through August 2028.
The decision comes after the nation’s Pardons Board, chaired by the king, met for the second time in as many weeks to consider Najib’s bid for a royal pardon. The king deferred a decision on his application, while granting clemency to other prisoners during its Sept. 11 meeting.
