NBA Europe is in the works and is projected to launch in fall 2027. But in an interview with Front Office Sports, NBPA executive director David Kelly revealed NBA players have a "serious problem" with NBA Europe that they will fight to fix before the league expands abroad. Kelly said NBA players deserve to some of the revenue generated by NBA Europe, because the expansion league will thrive as a result of the contributions of current and past NBA players.
And then to start a rival league that they do not participate in, participate in the economics of, we have a very serious problem with that,” Kelly told FOS’s Baker Machado. NBA players reportedly receive 51% of the revenue generated by the NBA. Kelly told FOS that players are not asking for 51% of the revenue from NBA Europe but still want a "good faith" amount of pay.
The NBA's current CBA does not mandate that players receive some of the revenue from NBA Europe. Kelly told FOS the union plans to implement a policy that gives players part of NBA Europe's revenue in the league's new CBA agreement. The current CBA expires on June 30, 2030.
However, either side (NBA or NBPA) can opt out of the agreement in October 2028, which would lead to the agreement ending after the conclusion of the 2028-29 season. Kelly told FOS there have yet to be conversations with the league or NBA commissioner Adam Silver about implementing a new policy to pay players revenue from NBA Europe.
