NBC News will present never-before-seen footage from its coverage of 9/11 in a documentary on “Dateline” as part of its commemmoration of the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on that date. The NBCUniversal-backed news division will present special coverage across next week on “Today,” “NBC Nightly News,” “Dateline,” “Meet the Press,” NBC News Now and NBCNews,.com. Anchor Lester Holt will present a one-hour documentary on next Friday’s “Dateline” that revisits New Yorkers whose experiences were captured by NBC News cameras on Sept. 11, 2001.
These people will reflect on their experience and discuss how the attacks shaped their lives. NBC News’ efforts will join those of ABC News, Fox News, CBS News, MS NOW and CNN. The 25th anniversary of the attacks has spurred many news organizations to offer a broader array of programming, which in most years is largely tied to commemoration.
NBC News will present special coverage throughout the day, starting at 7 a.m. eastern with a telecast of “Today” anchored by Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin. Guthrie will report from Ground Zero, and at 8:30 a.m., will anchor a special report as the nation observes moments of silence commemorating the victims of the attacks. The special coverage will also stream on NBC News Now.
Tom Llamas will anchor special editions of “NBC Nightly News” and “Top Story” from Ground Zero. A special edition of the “Here’s the Scoop” podcast will feature interviews with guests who were children on 9/11, and explore their perspectives a quarter century later now that they are parents.. Host Yasmin Vossoughian will also speak with a representative from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum about how to talk to children about 9/11.
At 10:30 p.m. on Friday, NBC News Now will stream “NBC Nightly News Presents: Great Americans: Service and Sacrifice,” featuring stories of Americans who answered the call for their country. Throughout the week, NBC News’ coverage will include a special “Cost of Denial” investigation on “NBC Nightly News,” that examines the ongoing health consequences of 9/11, as well as a “Great Americans” interview with Joseph Pfeifer, the first FDNY chief to respond to the World Trade Center attacks.
