An explosion at a New York City housing authority building that left a teenager dead and set the building on fire over the weekend was linked to an e-bike’s lithium-ion battery, according to a report. Fire officials said the blaze broke out around 7 p.m. Friday at the New York City Housing Authority Albany Houses apartment complex in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
Sources told NY1 that they believe the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery. It was not immediately clear where the e-bike was at the time of the fire. At least 34 fire trucks and first responder vehicles responded to the public housing development, located at 162 Troy Avenue.
On their arrival, first responders found smoke and flames coming out of the building. Authorities found an 18-year-old man unconscious inside an apartment in the building. He was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Residents described the fire as fast moving. And that’s messed up how we both moved here young and our small children and for her to lose one … ,” a neighbor told Pix 11 about the victim’s family. The victim’s identity has not been released by authorities and the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
