The New York Giants have managed to stay on top of the NFC East despite losing quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season back in Week 2. The team traded for quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings shortly after, and the Giants may not be done scouring the trade market.
With the Indianapolis Colts now open to moving running back Jonathan Taylor, according to ESPNs Adam Schefter, NFL insider Benjamin Allbright dropped a not-so-subtle hint Sunday morning about where the three-time Pro Bowler could be headed. Seems Taylor made,” Allbright wrote on X. Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the Colts are willing to move Taylor, naming the Giants — as well as the Broncos, Packers, Vikings and Seahawks — among the teams that have reached out.
The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones also tabbed New York as one of the favorites to land him. On the surface, it seems like the Giants don’t need a running back. Cam Skattebo is coming off a career-best 124 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in New York’s 27-21 overtime win over the Houston Texans.
However, it’s been a bumpy ride for the polarizing rusher. Skattebo lost a fumble in overtime against the Washington Commanders in Week 5, then didn’t get a single carry in a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints the following week, even though head coach John Harbaugh insisted he “didn’t bench” him. The second-year RB was also fined $7,073 for use of the helmet twice (Weeks 3 and 7).
With McCarthy now under center after Jameis Winston struggled as Dart’s replacement, a more stable workhorse back would go a long way toward taking pressure off the passing game. Taylor has been just that. The 27-year-old has 587 rushing yards and a league-leading eight rushing touchdowns through seven games, and he’s just one year removed from a 1,585-yard, 18-touchdown season.
He also signed a two-year, $44 million extension in August that runs through 2028, making him more than just a rental. That’s why he won’t come cheap. Schefter reported the Colts want a Christian McCaffrey-like package, while Tom Pelissero reported Indianapolis already turned down an offer that included a 2027 second-round pick plus another selection.
