On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is ruled out for Sunday's Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. The team revealed that Hurts will be unable to take the field due to a superficial blood clot on his left calf. The blood clot was discovered before the Eagles' Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, but he was cleared to play in that game without limitations.
A follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday revealed "movement" in the blood clot, resulting in the ultimate decision to rule Hurts out. When speaking to reporters on Friday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni talked about his concern for Hurts — who he views as a member of his family. Jalen and I have a special relationship, and there are times I've said to Jalen like, 'Man, I know you like I know my brother.' I feel like I'm getting up there in age that at some point I'm going to be like, 'I know you like I know my son,'" Sirianni said, via team insider John Clark of NBC.
"The connection piece is very important. It's so important between a head coach and a quarterback that we've worked hard on together because we know how important that relationship, that example of that relationship, is to everybody in the building," Sirianni added. "Your first reaction is always the care for the player because this is not just a coach-player relationship." "At the end of the day, my first reaction was always concern because I love Jalen," he concluded.
Backup QB Tanner McKee will serve as the team's starter in Sunday's matchup against the Panthers.
