King Harald of Norway died "peacefully" at the national hospital in Oslo at 6.35 a.m. local time.
Norway's King Harald has died at the age of 89, the royal palace said on Friday. "It is with deep sadness that we announce that His Majesty King Harald passed away peacefully at the National Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m.," a statement on the royal house's website said. Harald had been taken to hospital last week for treatment for a rare blood condition, and the palace announced on Thursday that his condition had become "extremely serious." Harald will be succeeded by his son, the new King Haakon VIII.
