On Saturday, No. 5 Ohio State recorded another victory, and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith continued advancing towards breaking more records in his impressive college career. The Buckeyes faced Iowa in their home venue, hours after basketball legend Caitlin Clark appeared on the set of ESPN's "College GameDay" and predicted her team would upset Ohio State. Unfortunately for Iowa fans, Clark's wishful thinking didn't prove accurate, as Ohio State won 31-14 over the No. 14 team.
Once again, quarterback Julian Sayin found his top target, Smith. The top Heisman Trophy contender had 11 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns to help power the Buckeyes' latest victory. However, Smith is still closing in on a Big Ten record, as Braylon Edwards had the most in the conference's history. Edwards played for Michigan from 2001 to 2004 and had 39 receiving touchdowns before his college career ended. The Michigan standout then became the Cleveland Browns' No. 3 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
After playing multiple seasons with Cleveland, Edwards went on to play in the league for several other teams through 2012. Ohio State's Smith will need to record three more touchdowns in his team's remaining seven games to tie Edwards' record, per ESPN Insights. Next up on the Buckeyes' schedule will be a home game on Saturday, Oct. 10, as they host the Maryland Terrapins.
Then they'll have an anticipated clash with the defending champions, Indiana, on Sat. It wouldn't be surprising if Smith is able to tie the record within these next two games at the pace he's been going. He and the Buckeyes also seem back on track to get into the College Football Playoff later this season, despite their earlier loss to Arch Manning and Texas.
Along with that, Smith leads all contenders in the odds to win the Heisman Trophy. According to Bleacher Report (via FanDuel), Smith was at +105 odds today, with Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell and Miami quarterback Darian Mensah tied for second at +700 odds to win the award.
