First-year Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has a strong weapon at his disposal in running back Omarion Hampton. McDaniel has been very complimentary of Hampton so far this preseason. And during an appearance with the "Chris Simms Unbuttoned" podcast on Wednesday, the Chargers OC continued that praise.
In fact, McDaniel said Hampton reminds him of legendary Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis. "The way he plays with the ball in his hands in space, the way he sets up his blockers by pressing and bringing the ball all the way to the heels of the blockers, reminds me of that is close to my heart and core. That's Terrell Davis," McDaniel explained.
"That's who I grew up watching. And so there's similarities that have really struck with me. "I'm really excited about O because I think he's an extremely hard guy to tackle that's just starting to find his true NFL confidence," McDaniel added.
"And guys with confidence with that amount of skill set, watch out.” Davis had one of the best running back peaks in NFL history, recording three consecutive First Team All-Pro selections with the Denver Broncos from 1996-98. He secured league MVP honors in 1998, rushing for a league-leading 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns. Hampton suffered a fractured ankle in Week 5 of his 2025 rookie season.
Through his nine game appearances, he rushed for 545 yards and four touchdowns, while reeling in 32 catches for 192 yards and another score. The Chargers will begin their regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13.
