Hawaii suffered a big loss to the team's offensive unit on Saturday when star wide receiver Pofele Ashlock was ruled out of the season opener against Stanford with a knee injury. Hawaii coach Timmy Chang reported the news to ESPN hours before kickoff. Ashlock has reportedly been dealing with this knee injury since the beginning of fall camp.
Chang told reporters he was recovering from an injury and could not participate in contact drills but there was hope Ashlock would be ready for the season opener. Ashlock is entering his senior season and his spent his entire collegiate career with Hawaii. He has led the team in receptions for the past two seasons, logging 61 in 2024 and 76 in 2025.
Additionally, Pofele ranked second on the team in yards (827) last season after leading the Rainbow Warriors with 721 receiving yards in 2024. Last season, Pofele also earned second-team All-Mountain West honors and was named the Hawaii Bowl Most Valuable Player. During the Hawaii Bowl, Pofele caught a Hawaii Bowl-record 14 receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns to help the Rainbow Warriors defeat California 35-31.
Ashlock helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to a 9-4 record last season, which was the most wins for the program since Hawaii went 10-5 in 2019.
