The newish NY/Nashville label Good English Records has been building a strong roster of rising bands, including Victoryland, Proun, Crate, face of an ancient gallery, and Style. Yesterday, New York duo Or Best Offer — Grace Schmidhauser and Brian Culligan — were the latest to join that marvelous family. They also released the lead single "Fast Strong Horse," from their forthcoming new album It Will Appear.
"Fast Strong Horse" is a wondrous ride. It begins with some electric drones, melancholic guitars, and somber vocals. Later, the song unravels with a stampede of percussion and brass embellishments.
The song's title comes from the final lines of Clarice Lispector’s debut novel Near To The Wild Heart. It’s about the desire to glean something useful and transcendent out of a period of feeling unknown to yourself, stoking the faith that some force could grab you by your collar and pull you back into your own life.” Watch the video, directed by Ella Sinskey, below.
