The Oregon Ducks entered the season with legitimate national championship hype. But through seven games, Oregon is 4-3 and struggling to labor through without star quarterback Dante Moore, who’s been sidelined for weeks with a concussion after taking a brutal hit to the head against USC. The Ducks were upset 39-31 in Week 2 to potential 2027 No. 1 overall pick Drew Mestemaker Oklahoma State, and they dropped another game three weeks later to No. 9 UCLA.
Fans seemed to understand both defeats, especially with Moore still sidelined and Oregon alternating between Dylan Raiola and Brock Thomas under center. But Saturday’s 21-10 loss to unranked Syracuse was seemingly the straw that broke the camel’s back. Oregon fans had seemingly been patient with head coach Dan Lanning, but now, many of those same fans are calling for his job, especially because he seems reluctant to fire offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer — a move many analysts agree needs to happen.
But Lanning’s loyalty to his friend has made him Public Enemy No. 1 in the eyes of a lot of Ducks fans. He rode Kirby Smart’s coattails into a head coaching job. With unlimited resources, he hasn’t done sh*t at Oregon except jump in pools with recruits and act like a fake tough guy in the media,” former NFL defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko posted.
Tonight,” one fan scoffed. My biggest issue is though, who in the hell do you replace him with?” another fan stated. Should have fired him after the 49-3 loss,” one user remarked, “Dan Lanning is making a case to get fired himself the longer and longer he keeps Drew Mehinger around. this is awful!!!” another user exclaimed.
Things don’t get any easier for Lanning and Oregon either. The team plays No. 24 Northwestern next week, followed by a matchup with No. 3 Ohio State the week after that.
