Pete Alonso led the Baltimore Orioles to an extra-innings win over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Their social media team had fun celebrating the dramatic victory. Down 3-2 in the ninth inning, Alonso crushed his 300th career home run with a game-tying solo shot against his former team.
Coby Mayo then hit a game-winning inside-the-park home run in the 11th to give the Orioles the 7-5 win at Citi Field. The Orioles posted a clip of Mets center fielder A.J. Ewing failing to catch Mayo's fly ball on the game-winning play.
They captioned it with a dig at their beleaguered National League opponent. That wasn't their only Mets roast. They wrote "met the moment" when posting Alonso's home run and emphatic bat toss.
Baltimore unleashed another pun when sharing the final score. "How do you like them apples?" the Orioles asked. The Orioles added further insult for the Mets, who fell to 69-82 following their third straight loss.
If that wasn't bad enough, the home crowd cheered Alonso's game-tying home run and gave the former franchise stalwart a curtain call. "There's a lot of history here with me," Alonso said after the game, per Jerry Beach of the . "It doesn't matter where and when, I just want to help the team win.
I'm just really, really happy for us to come back the way we did." If hitting a milestone home run against his old club wasn't big enough, Alonso helped the Orioles maintain ground in a hectic American League playoff race. They remain three games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild-card spot before attempting to sweep the Mets on Wednesday night.
