Though known for his documentaries about American filmmakers, Daniel Raim's project on Yasujiro Ozu was executed with great care and admiration.

Daniel Raim is a Los Angeles-based documentary director known for his films about American filmmakers, beginning with “The Man on Lincoln’s Nose” (2000), a documentary about production designer Robert F. Boyle that was nominated for an Academy Award. So his latest feature, “The Ozu Diaries,” which traces the life and career of Golden Age director Yasujiro Ozu, is something of a cultural stretch, but one that Raim, 52, has made with style and assurance, as well as love and admiration for his subject evident in every frame.

The film has been gathering critical accolades since its premiere at last year’s Venice International Film Festival, with reviewers praising its deep-dive examination of Ozu the man and artist. It has also screened widely at festivals, including the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival and the Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy.
