Colorado State started the season 2-0 with emphatic wins over Wyoming and Southern Utah. But in the three weeks since, the Rams have lost all three games, but the manner in which they lost is what was most concerning. Colorado State suffered losses to BYU, UTSA, and Oregon State — and the defense surrendered an average of 52 points per game during that stretch.
Saturday’s 56-26 loss to Oregon State was the last straw for head coach Jim Mora, who took action after the 30-point blowout. He was replaced as play caller during CSU’s loss to Oregon State today,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel wrote on X. Summers joined Colorado State in 2025 as a defensive coordinator.
Prior to that, he spent three years as the defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky. Midway through the 2025 season, Summers replaced fired head coach Jay Norvell as interim HC. He went 0-5 but was retained by Mora as his defensive coordinator.
Summers has coached in the college ranks since 2003. He’s had stints with Presbyterian (defensive backs coach), Troy (graduate assistant), Georgia (graduate assistant, defensive quality control), Georgia Southern (safeties coach), UAB (linebackers coach, co-special teams coach), UCF (defensive coordinator), Colorado (defensive coordinator, safeties, linebackers), Florida (defensive assistant), and Western Kentucky (defensive coordinator). Assistant head coach, defensive line coach, and co-defensive coordinator Kenny McClendon is the most likely candidate to replace Summers as DC for the remainder of the season.
