The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks, and it was an embarrassing effort by the offense. The Chiefs only put up three points opposed to the Seahawks' 20. It was clear something wasn't clicking on the Chiefs' offense.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes believes he was partially to blame for his team's rough outing. For starters, he needs to have more "confidence" in his offensive line being able to protect him. Mahomes was sacked once during Sunday night's game, and he's been sacked seven times total this season, tied for the 31st most in the league this season.
It sounds like Kansas City's offensive line is doing a pretty good job at protecting Mahomes, but he hesitant about that for some reason during Sunday's game. I created some of those pressures," Mahomes said. "I have to have confidence those guys are going to hold up.” Additionally, Mahomes highlighted how his downfield passing game was weaker on Sunday.
So was the Chiefs' running game. Mahomes's longest pass of the game was 19 yards, his shortest of the season. The Seahawks held the Chiefs to just 165 receiving yards and 50 rushing yards on Sunday.
Mahomes is aware of what needs to change in his game moving forward so a defense doesn't limit the Chiefs like the Seahawks did. "If you look at how Seattle played us ... if we can get that run game going a little more, like we have done in previous weeks that downfield passing game a little more," Mahomes said. "Then, I've got to give guys chances. ...
That's stuff I need to get better at—I need to throw the ball with more air on it to let guys make plays. If we can kind of marry that run and pass game up again like we were earlier in the season, that downfield passing game will come back." The Chiefs will be re-evaluating their offensive game plan this week ahead of facing one of their AFC West rivals, the Denver Broncos, on Sunday. If the Broncos try to stop running back Kenneth Walker III as much as the Seahawks did, the Chiefs need to evolve and overcome the challenge instead of shying away from it.
