PayPal is discussing a potential sale to a buyer group that includes Stripe and private equity firm Advent International, Wall Street Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter. Media reports said Stripe and Advent had submitted a joint bid in July of $60.50 per share, valuing the payments company at about $53bn. That figure would represent a steep decline from PayPal's peak valuation of almost $360bn in 2021.

Earlier this year, the company issued weaker-than-expected profit guidance for 2026. PayPal has faced increasing pressure from rival payment services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. According to the Wall Street Journal, discussions have continued after the earlier deal did not proceed, and a fresh agreement could emerge "in the coming weeks".

The value of any revised transaction has not been disclosed. PayPal shares rose following the report and finished the session nearly 1.8% higher. Stripe was founded in 2010 by brothers Patrick and John Collison to provide online payment tools for businesses.

The company remains privately owned and is widely viewed as a likely future IPO candidate. PayPal was established in 1998 and counts billionaire investor Peter Thiel among its co-founders. Elon Musk later became involved after the business combined with his start-up X.com.

The company was an early force in peer-to-peer online payments, helping popularise digital money transfers between individuals. Several of its former executives later became prominent figures in Silicon Valley, a network often referred to as the "PayPal mafia", with alumni going on to launch or lead businesses including Tesla, SpaceX, LinkedIn, YouTube and Palantir. "PayPal reportedly in sale talks with consortium including Stripe and Advent" was originally created and published by Electronic Payments International, a GlobalData owned brand.
