The Pittsburgh Penguins made NHL history with their blowout win against the Philadelphia Flyers in their season opener.

The Pittsburgh Penguins certainly kicked off their 2026-27 season on the right foot, as they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers by a 7-0 final score. Due to their excellent win against the Flyers, the Penguins have now made some NHL history. According to OptaSTATS, the Penguins' victory over the Flyers is now the largest road shutout in a season opener in the history of the NHL.

This stat just shows how dominant the Penguins were in their 7-0 win against the Flyers. It is undoubtedly a big accomplishment for Pittsburgh, and this is especially so when noting that they were eliminated from the playoffs by the Flyers just last spring. The Penguins had 14 of their 18 skaters record at least one point in their win against the Flyers, too.

The Penguins also had five players record at least two points, including Filip Hallander, who had a team-best three on the night. That is very impressive, and the Penguins will be hoping that they will continue to get good secondary scoring throughout the campaign. It will now be interesting to see what the Penguins can do as an encore when they face the Montreal Canadiens in their next game on Oct. 3.
