It's cool to see that a great Live On KEXP performance video can still have a profound effect on a band's future. This year, Angine de Poitrine became festival-conquering viral sensations, largely on the strength of their KEXP session. It's hard to imagine anything like that happening with Vancouver noise-rockers PISS, whose music is probably too raw and confrontational to draw quite that many people in.
But I have seen a whole lot more people talking about PISS since their KEXP session went up online earlier this month, and I can see why. It's a bracing, magnificent performance, and frontwoman Taylor Zantingh rips herself heroically. You should really watch it.
PISS did that KEXP session because their extremely impressive full-length debut you made me / skin on linen comes out in a few months. We've posted the early tracks "time loop at hot slit" and "blocking a scene you can’t remember." Yesterday, PISS shared another new one called (deep breath) "Rote Zora. The track is a clangorous freakout.
On the quiet bits, Taylor Zantingh speaks emotionally but calmly about the "scare-away effect" that "non-autonomous, non-radical women" face when they try to resist sexual violence. On the loud parts, she roars, "How can I make you understand?" Eila Vallevand directed the video, a mixed-media montage of protest. Check it out below. you made me / skin on linen is out 10/30 on Sub Pop/Paper Bag.
