NFL training camps are in full swing, and as teams ease back into on-field drills and practices in the dead of the summer, football fans have a reason to rejoice. The preseason officially began last week, and teams are preparing for their second exhibition games this weekend. As the start of the NFL regular season inches closer (Sept. 9), we are continuing to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.
We’ve already looked at the top position battles to watch, rookies with the best chance of winning a starting job, and the players in the most danger of being cut, plus we’ve ranked the top head coaches, quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers by division. Now, we’re power ranking the tight end rooms in each division. After losing Dalton Schultz to the Houston Texans, Ferguson stepped right in and the Cowboys haven’t really missed a beat.
Ferguson had 71 catches and 761 yards in 2023, and he had a career-best 82 catches and eight touchdowns last year. Schoonmaker, a former second-round pick, hasn’t really broken out like Dallas has hoped, but he should be good for around 20 catches and 200 yards, and for a backup tight end, those are respectable numbers. Goedert has been a model of consistency for Philadelphia over the last seven seasons.
He’s never had less than 42 catches or 496 yards in any of those years. The 31-year-old also scored a career-high 11 touchdowns last year. The Eagles grabbed Stowers in the second round of the 2026 draft, and they clearly have big plans for him.
The 6-foot-4, 239-pounder has lots of potential, and he logged 62 catches, 769 yards, and four touchdowns for Vanderbilt last year. Most expect Likely to take over as New York’s TE1 after following head coach John Harbaugh from Baltimore to New York. He’s totaled 135 receptions, 1,568 yards, and 15 touchdowns in four seasons.
Johnson surprised a lot of people last year with his 45-catch, 528-yard, five-TD season. He’s only 25, and if he responds to Likely’s presence as a challenge rather than an insult, the Giants could have one heck of a 1-2 TE punch. Okonkwo had three straight 50-catch seasons in Tennessee, putting up a career-high 560 yards last season.
