Typhoon Dujuan is forecast to bring heavy rains to the Izu Islands and the Kanto region starting Monday afternoon before moving east, with Level 4 danger warnings issued for some areas as Japan marks its Silver Week holidays. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents in the Izu Islands and Kanto, as well as Pacific coastal areas of Tokai and Tohoku, to remain on high alert for landslides and violent winds, as well as flooding in low-lying areas, swollen or overflowing rivers and high waves. People in urban areas are advised to remain on the alert for flooded roads and to avoid underground facilities where water could accumulate and vehicles could become trapped.
The powerful typhoon’s arrival has coincided with Silver Week, which runs through Wednesday, with the storm likely to disrupt transport networks and wreak havoc on cultural events. Monday, the year’s 25th named storm was moving north-northeast over waters south of 180 kilometers south of Hachijojima island in the Izu chain at 20 kilometers per hour. It had an atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals at its center, with maximum sustained winds of 35 meters per second (70 kph) and maximum gusts of up to 50 meters per second.
In the 24 hours through 7:40 a.m. Monday, 387.5 millimeters of rainfall was recorded for Izu Oshima in the Izu chain, while Kimitsu, Chiba Prefecture saw 283.5 mm of rain, according to the weather agency. In the subsequent 24 hours through 7 a.m.
Tuesday, rainfall could reach up to 350 mm in the Tokai region, 300 mm in the Kanto and Izu Islands, and 200 mm in Tohoku. The Tokyo Game Show, which began Thursday, announced the cancellation of Monday’s program, shortening the five-day video game extravaganza by a day. East Japan Railway announced partial and full-day suspensions of operations on some lines in Chiba and Ibaraki Prefectures as well as western Tokyo on Monday.
