A 24-year-old South Carolina woman and her unborn son have died following an incident in Sumter County where her hair became entangled in a go-kart. Baylee Johnson was 15 weeks pregnant when the incident occurred in the area of Skinner Road on August 23, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker reported to local news outlet WIS 10. Her hair caught in a sprocket of the vehicle, causing severe injuries.
Johnson was transported to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, where she died eight days later on Aug. 31, surrounded by her family. Johnson and her boyfriend, Justin Lowder, had recently learned they were expecting a baby boy, whom they named Johnny. She had also recently secured her dream job as a medical assistant at Prisma Health OB/GYN–Sumter.
In her obituary, Johnson was remembered for her devotion to others and her lively, humorous nature. She would dance anywhere, sing as loudly as she wanted and never give a second thought to who might be watching — or how crazy she looked while doing it. She did not simply walk into a room; she brought life into it.” Her obituary noted that she enjoyed hunting, fishing, go-kart racing, reading her Bible and spending time with her family, her dogs Ruby and Roscoe, and her nieces and nephew.
From the moment she learned he was there, Baylee was his mama, and Johnny was completely and unconditionally loved.” Her family expressed gratitude to the community and hospital care team for their support during her final days.
