Sci-fi author Andy Weir has been having a great year thanks to the film adaptation of his novel Project Hail Mary. The movie, starring Ryan Gosling, was a critical and commercial smash hit and is garnering some awards buzz. Now Weir is hoping that success might help him fulfill his dream of making a Star Trek series.
In an interview with Inverse, Weir refused to share his Star Trek idea when asked, because he wants to "pitch that again, with everything changing." The recently completed merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance is sure to shake up the new company's plans. Star Trek was already in flux, with both current shows set to conclude next year and a film reboot in the works.
This could be the perfect chance for Weir to get a second shot at making his show. Weir shared that he had pitched a Star Trek series back in March while appearing on the Critical Drinker podcast. He called the current run of Paramount shows led by executive producer Alex Kurtzman "shit" and said of Kurtzman, "He is a nice guy.
But they didn't accept my pitch so, you know, fuck 'em." He later apologized to Kurtzman on Facebook. The author also revealed an idea for a Star Trek/Star Wars crossover called Star Star. Plot points would include Spock becoming a Force ghost after dying in The Wrath of Khan, Sulu gaining Jedi abilities, and McCoy entirely healing Darth Vader's body.
Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are both set to end sometime in 2027. After that, there will be no Star Trek shows on television for the first time since Discovery began airing in 2017. That series ended a 12-year drought for the franchise, one that fans hope won't be repeated.
There is a little more movement on the film front. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have been tapped to helm a reboot, though progress has been slow. The pair recently revealed that their film will be heavily inspired by Training Day and Crimson Tide.
