Matthew Stafford has continued to add to his legacy in recent seasons, earning his first NFL MVP award for the 2025 campaign. On Sunday night, Stafford reached a milestone no other player has ever achieved in the history of the league during the Los Angeles Rams contest against the Denver Broncos on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 3. Per ESPN Insights, Stafford is the first player to throw for 20,000 yards with multiple teams.
He's thrown for 45,109 yards during his time with the Detroit Lions and 20,000 with the Los Angeles Rams. He threw a pick-six in the fourth quarter.
It was the 33rd pick-six of his career, the most any NFL quarterback has ever thrown in the league, beating Brett Favre's mark of 32. Before the season, Rams head coach Sean McVay told Albert Breer that he believes Stafford is getting better as he ages. Stafford noted that he has to make up for not being a mobile quarterback, relying on the Rams to put talented receivers around him.
"I’m not Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, some of these guys that can go out there and make these unbelievable creative plays with their legs. "So I’m really blessed to have good players and a head coach that puts us all in a really good position to succeed. I was playing with a ton of confidence and trust in the players around me and in myself, and that can be a dangerous thing when a quarterback is playing that way.” Stafford is trying to chase his second Super Bowl with the Rams this season.
