‘Red Alert’ issued over Trump-shaped ecstasy pills found in tourist hotspot

It isn’t the first time Trump-shaped ecstasy pills have surfaced abroad

A Dutch addiction and mental health institute has issued a warning about potentially deadly ecstasy pills designed to resemble the head of U.S. The respected Trimbos Institute said Friday that several tablets were recently submitted to a network of centers offering drug-testing services to users prior to consumption. "Absolutely do not use these pills," the institute cautioned in a news release.

It published a picture showing the pills, which depict Trump's head on one side with "NL" and "Trump" stamped onto the opposite face alongside a vertical line. One tablet has a green face, while another is yellow. In the "Red Alert " posted online, the institute warned that the tablets hold a high concentration of PMMA, or para-methoxymethamfetamine, a chemical resembling MDMA, ecstasy's active component.

However, PMMA takes longer to take effect than MDMA, which could prompt users to consume more thinking the initial pill failed, risking an overdose. Using them "can lead to overheating with possibly deadly consequences." Spokesperson Anniek Groothuis reported no known instances of severe illness or death among potential users. "We do not know of any victims where PMMA was found in their blood," she told The .

Producing, selling, and using ecstasy remains illegal in the Netherlands but it is widespread in clubs and music festivals. A 2024 government report indicated roughly 550,000 individuals consumed it that year. Trump-shaped ecstasy has surfaced previously.

German authorities seized thousands of orange Trump tablets in 2017. And Trump-faced ecstasy pills with similar branding (”Trump NL”) were circulating at a UK music festival in August 2018. Drug safety non-profit the Loop tested the drugs at the time and said that they had three times the average adult dose of MDMA.

More Trump-shaped pills were found in Clearwater, Florida, in August 2019 after an overdose and pills with the words “great again” stamped on the back in capital letters were discovered in Indiana. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies
