As the 2026-27 season rapidly approaches, the Detroit Red Wings have made a major decision with their disgruntled captain Dylan Larkin. The Red Wings announced on Friday that they have stripped Larkin of his captaincy and will not name a new one before the start of the season. "The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named," the Red Wings announced.
"Any further discussions of decisions regarding this topic will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place." The Red Wings also shared that Larkin will be reporting to training camp despite his trade request and the team removing him as their captain. In addition, Detroit shared that conversations regarding Larkin's trade request will happen privately when they hire their next general manager. Seeing the Red Wings strip Larkin of the 'C' is not surprising, as he made it clear this offseason that he wants out of Detroit.
It is the right call from the Original Six club, as they need a leader who wants to be there. Larkin appeared in 74 games last season for the Red Wings, Larkin posted 34 goals, 33 assists, and 67 points. With numbers like these, he would be a strong addition for any NHL team that is in need of a top-six center.
However, he has a full no-trade clause, so he has complete say over where he will get moved.
