Jordan designers discuss the 30th anniversary of Space Jam, the anniversary collection's heritage details and modern updates.

Few people in today’s fast-moving digital spaces have Michael Jordan's cultural staying power. Nearly three decades after his NBA playing days, His Airness has continued to cement his place in culture. That’s no surprise considering how many inroads he’s made into the larger zeitgeist.

His greatness has spilled beyond the court, from his highly successful Air Jordan sneaker line to his beloved film with the Looney Tunes, Space Jam. As Jordan Brand continues his legacy, team members explain how they keep finding new stories to tell around these storied moments. Three decades after Space Jam redefined the intersection of basketball, animation, and sneaker culture in 1996, Jordan returns to Tune World.

The lineup's cornerstone is a faithful tribute to the original Air Jordan 11 silhouette Jordan wore in the final matchup against the skill-stealing Monstars. For designer Terrance Harvey, nailing the classic Air Jordan 11's precise specifications was the most crucial part. "It was super important for us to get this one right," Harvey, expert, Streetwear Footwear Product Management Icons, Global Jordan, told Newsweek, pointing to the distinct white substrate beneath the patent leather mudguard.

This design choice directly echoes the 2000 retail release. While Jordan wore a slightly modified colorway during the filming of Space Jam, the retail model earned legendary status with vibrant royal blue hits. Harvey highlighted several key archival details on the staple piece: The woven tongue label swaps traditional "Jumpman Jordan" text for "Jumpman Jam," a direct film reference.

The heel features double-row "23" stitching, capturing the camera flash during Jordan's game-winning half-court dunk. The original face-box packaging from the 2000 release returns to deliver full nostalgic impact for collectors. Expanding the collection beyond classic retros required an examination of modern media production.

Harvey introduced the Air Jordan 11 "Green Screen," created to connect with younger generations who experience Jordan's legacy through digital streaming platforms. "Kids are creating content," Harvey said. "What if a kid takes this AJ11, uses it on the green screen, and it can become any shoe that he or she desires?" The silhouette features a green upper with a nubuck mudguard, suede eyelets, and bubble laces, inspired by famous behind-the-scenes photos of Jordan filming the final game against a team of actors in green bodysuits.
