Rob Reiner received a heartfelt tribute during Monday’s Emmy Awards, with folk singer Noah Kahan leading a strings-backed rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” during the In Memoriam section as actress Jamie Lee Curtis invoked Reiner’s “All in the Family” character to commemorate his life. Reiner took home his first Emmy win for best supporting actor in 1974 for his role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in “All in the Family,” and he won again in 1978. Forty-eight years later, the comedic icon’s legacy lives on, adding a third Emmy win to his name and breaking the record for longest span between acting Emmy wins — a record his father, fellow comedian Carl Reiner, previously held.

Reiner died in December 2025 at age 78. He has been remembered across the industry as the legendary filmmaker behind classics like “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “A Few Good Men.” His guest appearance on FX’s “The Bear” was one of his final on-screen performances. Reiner and his wife Michele were allegedly stabbed to death in their home in Brentwood by their son Nick Reiner.

He is currently in holding at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility after a Los Angeles County grand jury indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances of “lying in wait” and “multiple murders.” These circumstances make him eligible for the death penalty. He will appear before a court on Oct. 23 for a hearing to access $1.5 million in trust assets so that he can rehire his private defense attorney. The couple’s death sent shock waves of sadness through the industry.

Reiner received a heartfelt tribute at the 2026 Oscars during the In Memoriam section led by his friend and collaborator Billy Crystal. And for us who had the privilege of working with and knowing him and loving him, all we can say is, buddy, what fun we had storming the castle.” He was also honored at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards. Host Chelsea Handler finished her opening monologue by sharing heartfelt words about the late director.

I think we can all agree that we definitely need more of that. So let’s use tonight as a reminder of that decency and as a reminder of everything Rob and Michele represented and fought so hard for.”
