The Kansas City Royals designated a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove-winning outfielder for assignment on Monday.

MLB teams have an opportunity to add an experienced MLB outfielder for the stretch run. The Kansas City Royals designated Starling Marte for assignment in a string of moves Monday. They also optioned infielder Josh Rojas and pitcher Jose Cuas to Triple-A Omaha to make room for three arrivals.

Kansas reinstated first baseman Vinny Pasquantino and third baseman Maikel Garcia from the injured list. Both regulars are back in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Athletics. The Royals also called up Connor Thomas, a left-handed pitcher with a 2.40 ERA in the minor leagues this season.

Marte joined the Royals this offseason after concluding a four-year stint with the New York Mets. The 37-year-old has served a reduced role, seeing most of his scarce playing time against left-handed pitchers. The two-time All-Star batted .242/.298/.314 with two home runs in 168 plate appearances.

A decade removed from back-to-back Gold Glove awards in 2015 and 2016, Marte had minus-2 Defensive Runs Saved in the outfield. Marte is a career .284/.340/.436 hitter since making his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012. He's compiled 165 home runs and 363 stolen bases, the most among any active player, over a commendable 15-year career.

The Royals can move Jac Caglianone back to right field with Pasquantino reclaiming first base, creating less room for Marte with Isaac Collins, Kyle Isbel, John Rave and Tyler Tolbert also vying for playing time. Designating Marte for assignment gives him a chance to join a contender and pursue his first World Series appearance.
