Russell Wilson could become a college football head coach very soon. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Super Bowl champion quarterback interviewed for the head coaching job at North Carolina State on Tuesday. Wilson is familiar with the program, as he played for the Wolfpack for three seasons.
This news comes days after former NC State and NFL quarterback Philip Rivers was named a serious candidate for the job, per On3's Pete Nakos, Chris Low, and Brett McMurphy. The Wolfpack are seeking a new head coach after firing Dave Doeren. Wilson joined NC State in 2007 but made his debut in 2008.
He was the Wolfpack's starting QB for three seasons before joining Wisconsin in 2011. During his time at NC State, Wilson was named ACC Rookie and Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2008, selected to the All-ACC First Team in 2008, and named to the All-ACC Second Team in 2010. After college, the Seattle Seahawks selected Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
He spent 10 seasons in Seattle and was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times, named to the All-Pro Second Team in 2019, and led the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances with one win. In 2022, the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Wilson played two seasons in Denver before the team released him in March 2024.
Following Wilson's release in Denver, he signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was selected to his 10th Pro Bowl after completing 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Last year, Wilson signed a one-year contract with the New York Giants.
He played in six games with three starts and threw for 831 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. In June, Wilson annoucned his retirement from the NFL. He currently works as a broadcaster for CBS Sports.
