If bread is your weakness, set aside some time — and perhaps some stomach room — for the Setagaya Pan Matsuri (Setagaya Bread Festival), which returns to Tokyo’s Setagaya Park from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 with 91 bakeries and dozens of festival-exclusive creations. Since its inaugural edition in 2011, which drew 7,000 visitors, the festival has grown into one of Japan’s largest bread festivals, attracting about 60,000 people annually. It also reflects Setagaya Ward’s reputation as a “bread town,” with one of the highest concentrations of bakeries in the country.
This year’s lineup includes 91 bakeries. Attendees can also preorder bread from 27 participating bakeries for pickup at the festival. Condiments and other accompaniments will be available from 32 specialty food vendors, including honey specialist Hachibee Bee Farm, hot sauce purveyor Hot Sauce Bar and jam maker Anne’s Kitchen.
