The Mise En Scene Company has taken worldwide sales rights to “Run,” the marathon comedy-drama led by “Schitt’s Creek” star Sarah Levy, and has unveiled the first-look image exclusively with Variety. The London and New York-based outfit, known as MSC, will open sales on the U.S. production at the American Film Market, operating from the Film Export U.K. stand. Phillipa Soo (“Hamilton”) and Adam Pally (“Happy Endings”) co-star.
Melissa Miller Costanzo directs from “Plain Jane,” the first novel by Barrie Levitt Knee, who produces alongside Matt Jensen. Levy plays Jane Cooper, whose marathon unfolds alongside flashbacks. One thread follows her bond with Gaby (Soo), who roomed with her in college, through a falling-out and, eventually, a reconciliation.
The other tracks her marriage to Jordan (Pally), who longs for a larger family. A quiet act of generosity on Jane’s part spirals into consequences that change lives, forcing her to reckon with what she did and what doing right by those closest to her actually requires. The race gives the film its structure and much of its emotional drive.
Chris Redd (“Saturday Night Live,” “Bust Down”) and Hannah Dunne (“Mozart in the Jungle”) round out the cast as Mitch and Kountry, respectively. It is as kind-hearted as its creator, and we’re very happy to be representing it and to put it out there into the world,” said Paul Yates, CEO of The Mise En Scene Company. The film is MSC’s first pickup in the romantic comedy space.
Levy, who played Twyla Sands on “Schitt’s Creek,” also has “Surreal Estate” and “United We Fall” among her credits. Soo earned Tony and Emmy nominations after originating the role of Eliza in “Hamilton” on Broadway, while Pally played Max Blum in “Happy Endings.” Costanzo directed “The List” for Universal Pictures, with Halston Sage, Christian Navarro and Chrissie Fit. She made her writer-director debut with “All These Small Moments,” starring Molly Ringwald, Brian d’Arcy James and Jemima Kirke, which bowed in Tribeca’s Spotlight Narrative section in 2018 before Orion Classics picked it up.
She has also wrapped “A Great Depression,” toplined by Paul Sparks, Kate Burton and Xander Berkeley. Music plays a central role. Lost Leaders provides the soundtrack, made up of 11 covers and two original songs, all sung by women, among them Soo and Vicki Peterson of the Bangles.
