World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler took the microphone for a press conference ahead of his first round at the Tour Championship, where he'll compete for his second-career FedExCup trophy at East Lake. While speaking with reporters, Scheffler recalled a memorable experience he shared with Tiger Woods at the 2020 Masters. In the only round of competitive golf they ever shared together, Woods recorded a career-worst 10 on the par-3 12th at Augusta National.
However, he went on to bounce back and birdie five of his last six holes. Scheffler talked about this impressive mentality on Wednesday. "When I talk about competitive instincts and about intensity each week, that's stuff that I learned just by watching Tiger," Scheffler said.
"I've only played with him once in competition — it was at the Masters... I just remember walking up to that first green watching him read his first putt and I was like, 'Holy smokes, this guy is into it.' That was my main takeaway, just the intensity that he brought to each and every shot. That's definitely something I've tried to model in my game." Scheffler won the first tournament of the 2026 playoffs, securing top position at the FedEx St.
Last week, he finished T12 at the BMW Championship. Scheffler will tee off at 2 p.m. ET alongside Matt Fitzpatrick on Thursday.
