SDF should let foreign nationals join as recruitment woes mount, experts say

As the Self-Defense Forces grapple with severe recruitment challenges amid Japan’s shrinking population, a think tank panel is recommending a bold shift in thinking: allowing foreign nationals to join. A Sasakawa Peace Foundation panel of experts pitched the idea to Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi on Wednesday, as a part of recommendations on bolstering the SDF’s capabilities.
