Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he had no knowledge about the recent reports involving Drew Brees.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter shared an interesting report on Monday night, claiming that Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees considered coming out of retirement to play for the Denver Broncos in last year's AFC Championship game. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix suffered a fractured ankle late in the team's divisional round overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills. Following this injury, then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive assistant Pete Carmichael reportedly had discussions with Brees about returning to the field, according to Schefter.

Brees, who turned 47 just days before Nix's injury, worked out to see how his body would respond. The legendary QB ultimately shut the idea down after experiencing discomfort in his wrist. Broncos head coach Sean Payton, Brees' long-time coach in New Orleans, claims he had no knowledge of these communications.

I didn’t; I was just like you guys.” Payton and the Broncos opened their 2026 season with a 31-10 blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. In Week 2, Denver will look to get back on track in a matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
